Overview of Tomatillo Nutrition

Scientific Name: Physalis philadelphica

Order: Solanales

Family: Solanaceae

Tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica) originated from Mexico. It is a small spherical-shaped berry in the tomato family. It has tart and sweet flavor and is yellowish when ripe. Do not confuse with its relative, goldenberry (Physalis peruviana). Tomatillos contain many nutrients good for health such as being a rich source of vitamin C. An amount of 100 g of tomatillos contains 11.70 mg of vitamin C providing 13% daily value (DV). Vitamin C is an antioxidant that supports the immune system by protecting the body from free radicals and stimulating the production of white blood cells. Vitamin C also contributes to the growth of blood vessels, bones, and organs. It also stimulates collagen production, which benefits the health of skin and connective tissues. Tomatillos also provide low amounts of other vitamins and minerals with antioxidant properties. These nutrients help strengthen the immune system, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, and maintain healthy bones, skin, and vision. Tomatillos are low in calories (2% DV) and fat (1% DV). They are eaten raw and cooked in a variety of dishes, but it is most often used in salsa verde.
