Overview of Gooseberry Nutrition

Scientific Name: Ribes

Order: Saxifragales

Family: Grossulariaceae

Gooseberries (Ribes) are native to Europe and Western Asia and grown around the world. Gooseberries are small and green in color that turn pink or purple when ripe. Like other berries, they have a sour and refreshing taste. Gooseberries are very nutritious fruit with many health benefits. Do not confuse with goldenberries (Physalis peruviana), which are known as cape gooseberries. Gooseberries are a rich source of vitamin C. An amount of 100 g of gooseberries contains 27.70 mg of vitamin C (31% daily value [DV]). The high vitamin C content is one of the reasons for the sour taste of the fruits. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that has a crucial role in the human body's immune response. It helps to fight inflammatory processes caused by infections. It also plays a role in stimulating collagen production and may benefit overall skin health. Gooseberries contain many vitamins, minerals, and flavonoids which have antioxidant properties. Flavonoids have been shown to potentially reduce inflammation. The fruits are low in calories (2% DV), but high in fiber (15% DV). Dietary fiber is important for healthy digestion. Gooseberries are a unique, healthy fruit to include in one's diet as a snack.
