Tart Cherry

Overview of Tart Cherry Nutrition

Scientific Name: Prunus cerasus

Order: Rosales

Family: Rosaceae

Tart cherry is native to Europe and southwest Asia. Because of its sour-tasting fruit, tart cherry is also called sour cherry. The fruit is a fleshy drupe (stone fruit) that is generally heart-shaped to nearly globular. Muffins enriched with tart cherry pomace (remaining skin and flesh after pressing out the juice) can help healthy individuals manage their glucose levels and dietary fat intake [Bajerska et al. 2015]. Safety: There have been reports of people being allergic to tart cherries. Safety information was derived from the following source: [Ballmer-Weber et al. 2002].
